Lodwick wins Olympic nomination - USSA
Olympic silver medalist Todd Lodwick earned an historic
nomination to his sixth Olympic team Saturday with
a victory at the 2014 Olympic Team Trials for Nordic
Combined at Utah Olympic Park. Lodwick is the first
American athlete to be nominated to a sixth Olympic
team. No Winter Olympian from any nation has competed
in more than six.
Lodwick took the lead with a jump of 95,5 metres
(125 p.) and stayed in front throughout the entire
10k cross country race. Bill Demong claimed an intermediate
second position with a jump of 91,5 metres (116
p.), Bryan Fletcher ranking third after 89 metres
and 112 points. From the cross-country race, this
meant a 36-second lead for Lodwick to Bill Demong
who lost his second place in the race to Bryan Fletcher.
Fletcher proved his strong cross-country shape by
posting the second-fastest cross-country time, only
being surpassed by his brother Taylor who improved
an intermediate eighth rank after jumping to a final
fourth rank.
Lodwick clinched the nomination and won $10,000
in the winner-take-all competition Saturday. "Winning
today was definitely a monkey off the back in being
able to say that I am in fact going to my sixth
Olympic Games. It’s daunting and humbling statement,
but I don’t think there was any doubt in my mind,
even before this competition, that I was going to
make my sixth team as long as I trained hard and
competed well."
