Like already on the normal hill, Michael Hayboeck also won the qualification for the Olympic competition on the large hill. The Austrian scored 124.8 points with his jump on 131 m and came in ahead of the two Japanese Daiki Ito and Reruhi Shimizu.

Ito posted a strong jump on 130.5 m that earned him 122.0 points. His teammate Shimizu scored 1.6 points less for a jump on the same distance. Marinus Kraus, who replaces Andreas Wank on the German team, was fourth with 130 m and 120.2 points. "My goal for the competition is to show two good jumps. I'm not nervous. I just hope that I can stay focused."

Finns gain self confidence

Anssi Koivuranta gained self confidence with 128.5 m and was fifth, 1.3 points behind Kraus. His teammates Janne Ahonen and Olli Muotka also achieved good results for Finland in 11th and 12th. Thomas Morgenstern once again impressed with a sixth place, shared with Taku Takeuchi, the third Japanese among the best today. Jernej Damjan was the best Slovene in eighth. While some pre-qualified athletes skipped the final jump, Maciej Kot gained confidence. The Pole was ninth in the qualification with 126 m. Also Jakub Janda will be satisfied with his performance and the tenth place.

Deschwanden among the best

Gregor Deschwanden attracted some attention in 14th, behind Poland's Jan Ziobro. Jurij Tepes and Anders Fannemel shared the 15th place. "Tomorrow I have to jump better than I did recently. It's not easy for me, I don't really have a good feeling for this hill", Tepes told. The Slovene, who turned 25 on the day of the qualification, focuses on the competition: "I will not celebrate my birthday today, because we have the competition tomorrow. But this is okay, we are travelling so much, so you get used to it."

Four Russians qualified

Without Mikhail Maksimochkin, who can't compete due to a rib injury, all four Russian jumpers qualified for the competition. Their best was Denis Kornilov in 18th, so they can't dream about winning a medal. Clint Jones had a reason to celebrate. The coach of the US team not only saw a successful qualification of his Canadian athlete Mackenzie Boyd-Clowes, but also Nicholas Alexander, Nicholas Fairall and Anders Johnson qualified for the competition. Boyd-Clowes' teammates Matthew Rowley and Trevor Morrice will also take part in the Olympic event on Saturday.

Diethart strong

Thomas Diethart, who is already pre-qualified, showed a strong jump on 131 m. Anders Bardal, bronze medalist on the normal hill, jumped on 130.5 m. It seems that Gregor Schlierenzauer is still not in his best shape. With 124.5 m the Austrian could not keep up with the best.

Stoch didn't jump in the qualification

Kamil Stoch, who was the best in the trial round, didn't jump in the qualification, just like Severin Freund and Noriaki Kasai. Stoch already explained on Thursday that he doesn't have problems anymore with the large hill in Sochi: "We have a good relationship. She is the nice, big sister of the normal hill." Peter Prevc, who jumped on 128.5 m, doesn't care too much about Stoch's outstanding shape: "I don't need to focus on him that much. There are also other jumpers who are in a very good shape. I have to stay focused."

The competition starts on Saturday at 6:30 pm CET.
