German triumph at Alpen Cup
weekend in Oberwiesenthal
The local heroes Terence Weber and Jakob Lange wowed
the home crowd with two victories at the Alpen Cup
weekend in Oberwiesenthal. Over 60 starters from
6 nations had come to Oberwiesenthal to compete
for points at this second stage of the Alpen Cup.
With a first and a second place and taking over
the leading position in the Alpen Cup overall standing,
the weekend was a stellar experience for Terence
Weber, who comes from Geyer, the same town as World
Champion and overall World Cup winner Eric Frenzel.
With a jump of 100,5 metres (126,5 p.), Weber already
had a dream start into his successful weekend, jumping
5 metres longer than all of his competitors. With
50 seconds of head start on Austrians Fabian Steindl
(95,5m; 114 p. and 96 m; 114 p.) on the 10 kilometre
track, Weber was unbeatable and won the race with
a clear margin of 14,4 seconds on Austria's Philip
Orter who set the fastest time on the track (21:04.9)
and improved from a ninth to a second rank. David
Welde came in third, 22,5 seconds after Weber. Jakob
Lange, Fabian Steindl and Sebastian Voigt followed
on ranks four five and six.
On Sunday, Weber was unbeatable on the hill again.
He jumped 103 metres, achieving 130,5 points which
meant a 14-second time advantage on strong skier
Jakob Lange who went out on the 5-kilometre course
in a promising second position after jumping 101
m (127 p.). Anton Schluetter ranked third at the
intermediate point with 34 seconds of time disadvantage
on the leading Weber. On the track, Lange only needed
the 12th fastest time to overtake Weber and arrive
at the finish line 27,1 seconds before the next
athlete. Weber narrowly defended his second position
again Philipp Kreuzer, who crossed the finish line
about 2 seconds after Weber. Philip Orter once again
set the fastest roller-ski time and turned an eighth
place after jumping into a final fourth rank.
OPA Coordinator Uwe Mu"hln was happy with the
competition weekend: "We had two competitions
on a really high level. In contrast to Winterberg,
the roller-ski track is very demanding here and
the hill is also larger so that the differences
between the athletes were bigger. But Terence has
fully used his home advantage and delivered a really
strong performance this weekend."
For the overall standing this meant a new leader:
Terence Weber took over the OPA leader BIB with
257 points, Austria's Philip Orter follows in second
(246 p.). Former leader Fabian Steindl now ranks
third with 234 points. The next Alpen Cup competitions
are now on in Seefeld, Austria at the 14th and 15th
of December.
