The ski jumping-world mourns the death of Pavel
Karelin. The 21-year-old Russian died in a car accident
in Russia.
The accident happened at about 4:00 am near his
hometown Nizhni Nowgorod, about 400 km east of Moscow.
According to the news agency Interfax, rescuers
reported that it was already too late for the athlete
when they arrived after the accident.
The Russian Ski Association confirmed Karelin's
death. Two other persons were in the car, both were
seriously injured.
Karelin was considered one of the great hopes of
Russian ski jumping with a view to the Olympic Games
2014 in Sochi. At the New Year's competition in
Garmisch-Partenkirchen he was second and stood on
the podium for the first time in his career. He
also achieved a podium result at the last FIS GP
competition in Wisla in July.
With Karelin ski jumping loses promising athlete,
who was well respected among the other athletes.
