Andreas Jacobsen denied Austria's
Thomas Morgenstern a home victory at Innsbruck,
winning the third of the Four Hills events by just
1.1 points. The Norwegian jumped last and silenced
a boisterous crowd with a 128.5m leap that was just
enough to pip his rival.
Simon Ammann mounted the bottom step of the podium
in a thrilling climax that heralded a huge turnaround
in the overall Four Hills standings.
Michael Uhrmann led for the vast majority of the
second round, jumping 126m after coming just 29th
at the first jump.
However, the last six jumpers provided a sensational
finale, with the lead changing hands five times.
Poland's Adam Malysz hit the front with a 126.5m
effort but was immediately trumped by Janne Ahonen.
Ammann then provided the leap of the day, soaring
132m and looking as though he would take a famous
win.
But it would not to be, as Morgenstern sent a packed
and partisan Austrian crowd into absolute pandemonium
with a 129.5m flight.
There was a twist in the tail, however, as Joacbsen
nicjked victory by the slenderest margin and took
first place in the overall Four Hills standings.
The consistent Finn Arttu Lappi moves up two places
to second overall, with Ammann third.
Gregor Schlierenzauer came to Innsbruck leading
overall but dropped to seventh after a disappointing
showing.
The closeness of this year's competition should
make for a classic finale on Bischofshofen's super-sized
hill, where the large distances involved mean the
Four Hills is still very much up for grabs.
